M6_Towards the Final Design

The departure point of the project is to create an interactive installation, that would have a certain behavior that would vary depending on external factors like the distance of the viewer or the intensity of sunlight. Each group conduced a series of explorations, in order to further investigate the properties of the materials. The decision was met to combine the electroluminescent foils and the Dye sensitized solar cells in an origami based surface, while the bioplastic group would develop the structural system of the installation. As far as the electoactive polymer elements are concerned, after further experiments concerning the material and the thickness of the frame, the initial wish of having them moving parts of the origami surface proved not realistic as the performance of the material could not allow it.  Consequently,  the design team proposed to array them on the ground level in order to form a “moving” landscape.

Beyond Kinetic Architecture: From Movable Structures To Vibrant Matter

Karmen works on the crossroads between design, architecture, art and science. Her research focuses on new materials, sonic gesture, design methods and enactive experience, resulting in projects ranging from haptic interfaces for stroke rehabilitation to responsive urban installations.  By introducing interactive technologies into architecture and public space, Karmen’s works aim to engage participants/inhabitants/citizens in social interaction and physical exploration of their surroundings. They have been presented at Ircam/Centre Pompidou (Paris), SF Cameraworks (San Francisco), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo(Torino), Bienal Miami + Beach, Museum of Modern Art (Ljubljana), Far Eastern Memorial Foundation (Taipei) and others. M6_prototypes: developing concepts

After a general day of introduction into the subject, the team of students are split into several groups where each group work with one material: electroactive polymers, electroluminescence, dye-sensitized solar cells and bioplastics. Every team work independently, experimenting with their material and improving their skills. Continue reading

M6_molecular utopia

New visions for architecture and urbanism were often accompanied or driven by radical technological developments or material innovations. However the knowledge of the master builders, who not only designed the buildings but also invented tools to process these materials, was linking a universal experience in construction with a deep understanding of physical materiality. M6_Phototrophia

Phototrophic is an autonomous interactive installation, that is comprised of electroactive polymers (EAP), electolunminescence foils (EL), dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC)  and bioplastics. The focus of this project was to make a self sufficient architectural composition from the above materials, that we customly produced following a simple set of instructions.

M6 Customised Materials / Articulation / Building Information Models

Material availability – the explosion of materials – the search for construction that is appropriate to materials – no longer boiled,
refined, concentrated, arduous, cleansed – materials are being thought up and made, drawn from the earth, in controlled processes. The most explicit manifestation of this is found in doping, the deliberate adding of impurities – materials achieve what we’ve never been able to achieve through continuities: they turn sunlight into electricity, they glow, shine, gleam, oscillate, move, see, smell, hear, sound, absorb, concentrate, switch, operate logically… simply because we’ve coded them, doped them.
This module conveys, by way of exercises, the methods of material doping. What we are looking for are material constructions which articulate these constructed material properties into new kinds of constructions. Processing, wiring, CNC production.
